Waterfall chasing is a year-round activity here in the Bluegrass State, and we don’t shy away from getting out and exploring in the colder months, either. Because the opportunity to see a frozen waterfall in Kentucky? That’s marvelous, and something we jump at the chance to experience. While an extended cold spell will often cause many of the state’s well-known falls to freeze, there’s a little-known waterfall at Pine Mountain State Resort Park that’s worth seeking out, in all its frozen glory.
Without a doubt, Pine Mountain State Resort Park is one of the most beautiful state parks in Kentucky. Pine Mountain stretches 1,159 acres across mountainous Bell County, the heart of Kentucky Appalachia.
The park is best-known for Chained Rock, a captivating rock formation that looks positively mythic in its grandeur. The mile-long Chained Rock Trail provides near-perfect panoramas this peak, but it is by no means the only striking feature in Pine Mountain worth seeking out.
On the ground, well below the 2,200 feet highs of Chained Rock, fascinating natural wonders await intrepid explorers…
…including one of the most beautiful and beguiling waterfalls in Kentucky!
This is Honeymoon Falls, the largest waterfall in Pine Mountain State Resort Park; a commanding 25-foot cascade that’s almost always flowing… except when it’s not.
You see, during cold snaps and snowfalls, Honeymoon Falls will often freeze over, its normally-rushing waters suspended mid-air, like magic.
Happening upon this frozen waterfall in Kentucky, in the quiet winter landscape of Appalachia, is an extraordinary experience sure to take your breath away.
You won’t, however, be breathless from the hike to Honeymoon Falls, which is just over a mile long, round trip. The trailhead closest to the lodge takes you counter clockwise and has a tougher elevation change, while the other begins on the road and climbs more gradually.
Either way, you’re in for a treat when you tackle this waterfall hike in the winter. In addition to the frozen falls, the way the cool winter light dapples through the trees is stunning, and the quietude of this Kentucky State Park in the cold-weather months is something worth experiencing.
Just bundle up!
Have you seen Honeymoon Falls in the winter? This frozen waterfall in Kentucky is truly a sublime sight to behold!

Going to the movies is a big tradition and extremely popular activity over the holiday season – and audiences are more ready to enjoy some well-earned leisure time with their loved ones. But with so many choices, how do you pick what to see? After two winter holiday seasons of movie-going […]
